ABC Dry Powder Systems
High-Performance Fire Suppression for Engine Compartments and Mobile Equipment
ABC dry powder fire suppression systems are designed for rapid knock-down of fire in engine compartments and heavy-duty mobile equipment.
Engineered for high-temperature environments and fuel-based fire risk, these systems provide reliable suppression across multiple fire classes and regulated vehicle applications.
What Is an ABC Dry Powder System?
Suppression Performance for Fuel, Oil and Electrical Fire Risks
ABC dry powder systems discharge a fine chemical powder that interrupts the combustion reaction and rapidly suppresses flames.
The agent is particularly effective in environments where fuel, oil and combustible solids are present, such as engine compartments of heavy-duty vehicles and machinery.
ABC powder provides immediate flame knock-down and prevents re-ignition when properly configured.
Fire Classes Covered
Protection Across A, B and C Fire Risks
ABC dry powder systems are effective against:
- Class A: Solid combustible materials
- Class B: Flammable liquids such as diesel and hydraulic oil
- Class C: Flammable gases (where applicable)
This multi-class capability makes ABC powder suitable for complex engine environments where different fuel sources may be present simultaneously.
Key Benefits

System Configuration
Direct and Indirect Suppression Architecture
Protega ABC dry powder systems can be configured as direct or indirect systems depending on application layout and suppression strategy.
In an indirect configuration, the detection tube functions solely as a detection element.
When exposed to elevated temperature, the tube ruptures and triggers the valve at the cylinder head. The ABC powder is then discharged through strategically positioned nozzles installed throughout the protected compartment.
This configuration allows:
- Immediate discharge at the hottest location
- Simplified installation
- Suitable solution for compact engine compartments
- Fully pneumatic autonomous activation
Indirect systems are typically selected when compartment geometry requires distributed agent discharge.
In a direct configuration, the pressurized detection tube also functions as the discharge line.
When exposed to flame or critical heat, the tube ruptures at the hottest point. The resulting pressure loss activates the cylinder and the ABC powder is discharged directly through the rupture point onto the ignition source.
This configuration provides:
- Optimized nozzle placement
- Controlled distribution of extinguishing agent
- Suitable coverage for larger or complex engine layouts
- Flexible system design for OEM integration
Indirect systems are typically selected when compartment geometry requires distributed agent discharge.
Protega ABC dry powder systems can be expanded with additional safety and monitoring features depending on operational requirements.
Available options include:
- Manual activation button (in-cabin or external)
- Visual and audible alarm modules
- Pressure monitoring switches
- Engine shutdown integration
- Beacon and siren activation
- CAN-bus or signal output integration
- Remote monitoring connection
These add-ons allow integration into existing vehicle or machine safety systems and provide additional operator feedback in the event of activation.
System configuration and integration level are defined during the application engineering phase.

When to Choose ABC Dry Powder
Multi-class fire suppression for high-risk engine environments.
ABC dry powder is particularly suitable when:
- Fuel and hydraulic oil ignition risk is present
- Rapid knock-down performance is required
- Engine compartment protection is the primary objective
- Heavy-duty vehicle applications demand robust suppression
Agent selection should always be based on application-specific fire risk assessment.
